What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a Te Ara Huarau School Profile Report from July 2023. This type of report sets out the focus for the school’s improvement work with ERO rather than judging results.

ERO and the school are looking at how well each learning area’s raising attainment plan lifts outcomes, and ERO named strengths that include a clear annual plan, a positive and inclusive culture, NCEA results that have stayed strong over time, growing self-review across the school, and senior leaders who know their achievement data and target support to groups of students.

The school’s priorities are to embed mātauranga Māori so that students’ language, culture and identity support their learning, to build digital fluency for more equitable outcomes, particularly for diverse learners, and to review access to science, technology, engineering and maths pathways for all students, with a focus on Pacific and Māori students.

Enrolling

As a Catholic state-integrated school, St John’s gives preference to boys whose families have a connection with the Catholic faith.

Families meet their Parish Priest to obtain a preference certificate before applying online, and the college’s enrolment policy sets the order of priority when there are more applicants than places. Non-preference applications are considered only if places remain, and the college says few have been accepted in recent years.

Attendance dues are compulsory and are collected for the Catholic Diocese of Hamilton. The college publishes its application closing date and process on its enrolment page, and successful applicants are invited to a short interview and an orientation day.
