It runs a Ruma Reo bilingual class that teaches the main subjects in a te ao Māori setting with a strong te reo Māori component, alongside English language learning, learning support, and fee-paying international students and sister-school exchanges.

What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a School Evaluation Report from April 2026. ERO found that most students do well and feel settled, with most in Years 7 to 10 reaching or passing the expected curriculum levels for reading, writing and maths.

Literacy, especially writing, had improved since the previous review, students needing extra help are identified early and are making progress, and ERO noted purposeful leadership, well-planned teaching and te reo Māori and mātauranga Māori woven through the curriculum. Attendance is the weak spot: only a small majority of students attend regularly, although it is improving and chronic absence is falling.

ERO’s priorities for the school are to lift regular attendance to meet government targets, to speed up progress so that every group of students achieves equitably, and to bring in new assessment tools that fit government requirements and the school’s integrated curriculum.

Leaders and the board are to review the attendance plan and student progress data every six months and each year.

Enrolling

Students who live in the home zone have the right to enrol, and families apply online with proof of address. Any out-of-zone places are offered under the school’s enrolment scheme, by ballot when there are more applicants than places, and the school sets out each year’s enrolment procedure on its enrolment information page.

Moving up to Rototuna Senior High School is not automatic. A new enrolment form is needed for Year 11, and students who enrolled from out of zone, or whose family moves out of the zone, cannot go on to the senior school unless they then live in its zone.
