About Meteor Theatre
The Meteor Theatre occupies a historic building constructed in 1900 as an aerated water bottling factory by C.L. Innes and Company of Waikato Breweries. After the brewery sale in the 1960s the structure served various uses, including as the Skateworld rink and music venue in the 1970s and 1980s. Hamilton City Council purchased and converted it into a black box theatre in 1996.
In 2014 the council gifted the venue to the One Victoria Trust, which raised funds for earthquake strengthening. The theatre closed for six months in 2016 and reopened in May 2017 as a fully accessible space. It now functions as Hamilton’s home for New Zealand theatre and a hub for emerging and established artists.
