Avalon is an official LINZ suburb in north-west Hamilton, and it is mostly a place of study and work rather than homes. It takes in Wintec’s Rotokauri campus, Te Kōpuku High, a large rail container terminal beside the North Island Main Trunk, and the industrial streets around Foreman Road, Crawford Street and Tasman Road.
Very few people live inside its boundary, so the population and census figures on this page are blank or very small. The name comes from Avalon Drive, the arterial road that runs past it, and many of the houses people think of as “Avalon” actually sit in neighbouring suburbs such as Forest Lake and Nawton.

About Avalon
Avalon lies between the North Island Main Trunk railway and the growing Rotokauri area on Hamilton’s north-western side. In the LINZ suburbs and localities dataset it is a separate suburb from Te Rapa to the east and from the residential suburbs to the south. Its land is taken up by a tertiary campus, a secondary school, rail yards and industry.
The biggest site is Wintec’s Rotokauri campus on Akoranga Road. Wintec describes it as a 56-hectare campus about ten minutes’ drive north of the city centre, and it was previously known as the Avalon campus. Programmes taught there include trades, engineering, sport science, animal care, and hospitality and cookery.
East of the campus, beside the main trunk line, are rail sidings and a container terminal that handle freight for the region.
The industrial streets around Foreman Road, Crawford Street and Tasman Road hold dairy processing and packaging sites, freight and logistics depots, engineering firms and a truck stop. Te Kōpuku High, a secondary school with a special character, operates from Foreman Road.
Avalon Drive gave the suburb its name. The road runs past the area and on through the western suburbs toward Rotokauri, and the name is widely used for the surrounding district as well as the official suburb.
Getting Around
Avalon Drive and Wairere Drive connect the area with Te Rapa, the western suburbs and the ring road around the city. Foreman Road and Crawford Street carry heavy vehicle traffic to the industrial sites and rail terminal, so expect trucks on weekdays.
Hamilton buses serve the Wintec Rotokauri campus and run along Avalon Drive. The Rotokauri Rise cycleway links toward the newer Rotokauri neighbourhoods for people riding to the campus.
Study and Work
For most visitors Avalon means a trip to Wintec, whether for classes, an open day or the campus training restaurant, or a visit to one of the many businesses on Foreman Road. The campus has student facilities, on-campus parking and a student hub with a library. For shopping, dining and other services, The Base is a short drive east.
