What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a School Evaluation Report from December 2025. ERO noted that the college was formed by merging Melville High School and Melville Intermediate, faced serious early challenges with staffing, leadership and systems, and has had a limited statutory manager working with the board since April 2024.

Less than half of students gained NCEA Level 1, 2 or 3 in the school’s first year, very few gained University Entrance, and Māori students’ results lag across all measures.

Less than a third of students attend regularly and nearly half are chronically absent. ERO did find a well-developed senior curriculum with a range of pathways, a noticeable drop in serious behaviour incidents, and a new leadership team establishing priorities and improvement goals.

ERO recommended that the limited statutory manager stay in place, with a focus on leadership, curriculum, teaching and assessment, and planned to review the school again within a year. The school must act immediately on a clear improvement plan covering behaviour, attendance, the junior curriculum and reading, writing and maths, reliable achievement data, learning support and leadership.
