The Hihikiwi Track is the shortest track to Pāhautea Hut and the summit of Mount Pirongia, starting from Pirongia West Road about 30 km from Hamilton. It climbs to Hihikiwi Lookout (905 m), one of the best vantage points over the west coast harbours, and is part of Te Araroa.
The Department of Conservation (DOC) grades it as an advanced tramping track: 4.8 km and 3 to 4 hours one way to the lookout, or 6.4 km and 4 to 6 hours one way to the summit.

About Hihikiwi Track
The track starts steeply from Pirongia West Road before settling into a steady climb to Hihikiwi Lookout at 905 m. DOC calls it one of the best vantage points over the west coast harbours, and a great place to watch the sunset if you are staying at Pāhautea Hut.
The track is muddy in places, with some boardwalk sections and a wooden viewing platform at the lookout.
From the lookout, an elevated boardwalk and steps lead all the way to Pāhautea Hut, 800 m further on. The summit is another 30 minutes from the hut.
As the shortest way up, it is a direct route for an overnight stay at Pāhautea Hut, and DOC notes it is part of Te Araroa.
Pāhautea Hut
Pāhautea Hut is a standard 20-bunk DOC hut with mattresses, non-flush toilets and tap water that is not treated (boil before use). DOC lists bookings as required.
Track Conditions and Safety
DOC says a good level of fitness is required. The high-level tracks on Pirongia follow steep-sided ridges, water is hard to find in summer, and the tracks can be very muddy after rain. Pack warm clothing, a raincoat, a torch and spare batteries, and check the Pirongia weather forecast.
When we checked on 18 October 2026, DOC’s Pirongia alert listed other tracks as closed after a February 2026 storm (Bell Track, Kaniwhaniwha: Kahikatea tree, Mahaukura Track and Wharauroa Track). Hihikiwi Track is not on that list, but check DOC before you go, use Plan My Walk, and tell someone your plans.
Getting There
3 km north of Te Rauamoa, turn off State Highway 31 onto Te Rauamoa Road, which becomes Pirongia West Road. The track starts about 7 km from the turn-off. When we checked on 18 October 2026, DOC’s alert said the road was open for light vehicles only after the February storms; check Ōtorohanga District Council for roadwork updates.
