The Waikato River runs through the middle of Hamilton, and riverside parks and walkways give anglers access to more than 15 km of it. Fish & Game describes the rainbow trout as plentiful and present all year, with brown trout throughout the river and rudd extremely abundant in summer.
Unlike the stretches above the city, where access is by boat or track, the city reach can be fished from the bank. Wellington Street Beach, Hamilton Gardens and Hammon Park are good places to start.

What You'll Find Here
Fish & Game names six favoured places on the city reach: Hammon Park (Malcolm Street, Hillcrest), Hamilton Gardens, Pirana Park, Ferrybank, Hamilton Parade and the riverside walkway between Ann Street and Pukete. Its Waikato River fishing map also marks Swarbrick Landing, Ann Street, Wellington Street Beach and Malcolm Street. It does not say which is busiest, so try more than one.
Much of the river above Hamilton is harder to reach. Fish & Game says the Karāpiro Dam stretch is reached by tracks, Karāpiro to Cambridge is boat access only, and the section from Cambridge to Hamilton has public access at only a short stretch at the Narrows, where fishing is mainly by trolling.
Hamilton has far more shore access, which is why the city reach suits anglers without a boat. For the water below the dam, see our Waikato River below Karāpiro Dam fishing guide.
Rainbow trout are present all year and, Fish & Game says, are generally smaller but easier to catch than the brown trout that live throughout the river.
Rudd are extremely abundant and easy for beginners, best in summer, and perch are plentiful in the river and in park ponds around Hamilton and Cambridge. Trout fishing is best in winter, when water clarity is highest and the summer algal growth has died back.
The river has long mattered to the Tainui waka people, who settled along it about 700 to 800 years ago. It gave physical and spiritual sustenance and was used for cleansing, healing, trade and communication. Waikato Regional Council describes it as a tupuna, taonga and mauri for Tainui waka and Ngāti Tūwharetoa.
How to Fish the Waikato River in Hamilton
Where and when
Early morning and the first hour or so after dusk are usually the most productive times. In warmer months, trout gather at the cool stream mouths on the western side of the river.
Fish & Game advises care around town and commercial areas where the bank has been built up, because there are more snags. Bridges sit where the river narrows and the flow runs fast close to the bank, so keep a low profile: trout hold just out in the current.
What to catch and what to use
- Trout on lures: Fish & Game suggests a 1.8 to 2.0 m spinning rod with light line. Lures it names include paddle-tail soft baits, a black Toby, a copper Zed, a red Veltic and a rainbow Rapala. In high or coloured water, use a larger, darker lure.
- Trout on the fly: wet flies outperform nymphs and dries. Use an intermediate or sinking line by day and a floating line after dark. Olive-green or black rabbit flies are the go-to, and a big plain black rabbit suits night fishing or coloured water.
- Trout on bait: smelt or worms on a small ball sinker, fished close to a size 6 hook. Smelt can be caught with a baitcatcher and bread.
- Trolling: troll slowly downstream, hugging the edges, on a three-way swivel rig.
- Rudd: a light float with a small hook, and bread or corn fished under the float. Bread-crust ground bait brings them in.
- Perch: light tackle with small soft baits.
Night fishing
Fish & Game describes night spinning with a fly on a short trace with split shot above it, and a floating line for fly fishing after dark. The rules below set the hours and conditions, so check them first.
Getting There and Facilities
- Access: riverside walkways on both banks lead to many entry points, according to Waikato regional tourism. The Te Awa River Ride follows the river for 60 km from Ngāruawāhia to Karāpiro.
- Hamilton Gardens: a 54 hectare park on the river bank, owned and managed by Hamilton City Council. Stay out of the gardens with fishing gear. Fish & Game notes the Turtle Lake in the gardens as a junior angler spot for perch, rudd and goldfish, but check Hamilton City Council for what is allowed there.
- Parking and toilets: check the Hamilton City Council park pages for the access point you plan to use.
Rules and Safety
- Fish & Game Auckland/Waikato regulations apply. The Waikato River is not named in the stream table, so the entry for all other rivers and streams applies: open all year to fly, bait and spinner. The closed stretch is between the Maraetai and Karāpiro dams, not in Hamilton. Check the regulations for bag and size rules and the extra notes.
- You need a current Fish & Game licence and must carry it. Bait fishing has extra rules: do not use fish or clams taken from another water as bait, and do not carry water from one waterway to another. Check, Clean, Dry all gear before moving between rivers.
- Rudd and perch count as sports fish in this region. Koi carp and catfish are also in the river but the regulations do not cover releasing them. Check the Fish & Game regulations or phone the regional office before fishing for or releasing them.
- After heavy rain the river can carry more sediment and bacteria. Council wastewater overflows have happened: in 2022 Hamilton City Council was fined over an overflow into a stormwater tributary of Te Awa o Katapaki Stream. Check LAWA before fishing or letting a dog near the water.
- High or fast water near bridges and the built-up banks is dangerous. Do not wade when the river is rising or coloured.
