Flying into Hamilton is a quick way to reach the Waikato, but the airport sits south of the city, so most visitors need a car to get anywhere. Hiring one at the airport saves a taxi fare into town and lets you head straight for Hamilton, Cambridge, Raglan or Hobbiton.
★View the Best Car Rentals in Hamilton→Airport car hire is simple once you know how it works. Here is what to sort before you land, and what to expect when you collect and return the car.
Three ways airport pick-up works
Not every rental company has a desk inside the terminal, and that is not a problem as long as you know which kind of pick-up you have booked.
Desk in the terminal
- How it works
- Collect your keys from the rental stand and walk to the car park
- Worth knowing
- Hamilton Airport’s rental stands are on the ground floor, opposite the baggage carousel
Car waiting in the car park
- How it works
- Your confirmation tells you which parking area your car is in and how to get the key
- Worth knowing
- Read the instructions before you fly, not at the kerb
Shuttle to a city depot
- How it works
- A staff member meets you outside the terminal and drives you to the branch
- Worth knowing
- Check the meeting point and give your flight number so they can track delays
Hamilton Airport lists the companies with a presence at the terminal on its transport page. Others offer free pick-up and drop-off at the airport with a car waiting for you or a shuttle to their depot.
Book before you fly
Hamilton is a smaller airport than Auckland or Christchurch, and the number of cars available on a given day is limited. Booking ahead matters most:
- In school holidays and over summer, when visitors and returning Kiwis fill the fleets
- Around big events at Claudelands, Seddon Park or FMG Stadium Waikato
- For early-morning or late-evening flights, when desks may be closed and you need a pick-up arranged in advance
- For larger vehicles, such as SUVs and people movers, which there are fewer of
Add your flight number to the booking if the company asks for it. If your flight is delayed, let them know as soon as you can.
What to bring
Have these ready in your hand luggage, not in a bag that might go missing:
- Your full driver licence. If it is not in English, you will also need an accurate English translation or an International Driving Permit.
- A credit card in the main driver’s name. Most companies hold a bond or pre-authorisation on it for the insurance excess.
- Your booking confirmation, including the pick-up instructions.
- Details for any extra drivers. Everyone who will drive needs to be on the rental agreement and show their licence.
Avoid surprise charges
Most disputes over hire cars come down to what was agreed at pick-up. A few minutes at the start saves a lot of trouble later.
- Know the total price. Check what the quote includes: insurance, kilometres, extra drivers and any airport or after-hours fees.
- Understand your excess. Basic cover usually leaves you liable for an excess if the car is damaged. Decide before you arrive whether to reduce it.
- Inspect the car. Walk around it, note any scratches or dents on the inspection report and take photos on your phone, including the fuel gauge.
- Ask about fuel. Most companies want the car back with a full tank, and refuelling charges are usually higher than the pump price.
Consumer Protection’s advice on renting cars has a useful checklist, including your rights if the car breaks down or a damage charge seems unfair.
Driving away from the airport
If you are new to New Zealand roads, take a moment in the car park to adjust your seat and mirrors and set up your phone for navigation before you leave. Remember that we drive on the left, and roundabouts give way to traffic from the right.
From the airport it is a short drive into Hamilton, with Cambridge and Te Awamutu close by. Raglan, Waitomo and Hobbiton are all within an easy day trip, so a car opens up far more of the Waikato than flying in alone.
Returning the car
- Check the return instructions. Airport returns usually go to a specific parking area, with keys left at the desk, in a drop box or with a staff member.
- Refuel nearby. Fill up before you reach the airport so you are not charged a refuelling fee.
- Allow extra time. Give yourself time to return the car, check it with staff if needed and get to check-in.
- Clear out the car. Check the glovebox, boot and under the seats for chargers, sunglasses and passports.
If you drop the car at a city depot instead, ask whether a shuttle to the airport is available and book it when you arrange the return.
Questions to ask before you book
- Do you have a desk at the terminal, a car waiting in the car park, or a shuttle?
- What happens if my flight is delayed or arrives outside office hours?
- What is the excess, and what does it cost to reduce it?
- Are kilometres unlimited, and is roadside assistance included?
- Can I cancel for free if my plans change?
