The Background

Karāpiro is one of the eight Waikato hydro lakes that Mercury reports levels for. The top of the lake is the tailrace and spillway of Arapuni Dam, and the water from there down to the Little Waipa Stream is where most of the big fish come from.

Fish & Game says the upper reaches are the main trophy fishery in the Auckland/Waikato region. Rainbows there average about 2 kg and browns nearly 4 kg, and fish over 10 lb are not uncommon.

The big trout feed heavily on smelt. Spawning fish run up the Pokaiwhenua Stream, and its lower reaches below the falls on Arapuni Road give good river fishing for lake-run trout.

Most visitors know Karāpiro as a water sports lake. Mighty River Domain on the western shore is the hub for rowing, yachting, power boating, water skiing and waka ama, and the domain and surrounding land are historically and culturally significant to tangata whenua. Anglers share the lake with all of these users, so expect company on busy summer weekends near the domain.

How to Fish Lake Karāpiro

Where to fish

  • The upper reaches: the stretch from the Little Waipa Stream upstream to the Arapuni Dam tailrace fishes best, and the spillway and tailrace below the dam are open to fishing.
  • Stream mouths: the mouths of the Pokaiwhenua and Little Waipa streams are popular. Weed can be a problem at the Little Waipa.
  • From the shore: Horahora Road gives shore access to the lake.
  • Pokaiwhenua Stream: below the falls on Arapuni Road, the lower stream holds large lake-run trout.

When to fish

October and November can be very productive, especially after dark. Through summer there is often a big caddis rise in the evenings, and the upper reaches can fish very well then. Fish & Game singles out the evening rise between the Little Waipa and the tailrace.

Methods

  • Trolling: popular in the main body of the lake, and the fishing generally gets better the further upstream you go.
  • Match the smelt: the big trout feed heavily on smelt, so smelt-imitating flies and lures make sense year round.
  • Evening fly fishing: on summer evenings, fish caddis patterns to rising trout in the upper reaches.
  • Bait: allowed on the lake. Any bait fish must come from the lake itself.

Rules and Safety

  • Karāpiro comes under Fish & Game Auckland/Waikato’s rule for all other lakes: open all year to fly, spinner and bait. It is not a coarse fishing water. The 2026 Anglers Notice took effect on 1 October 2026. Check it for limits.
  • Everyone, of any age, must carry a current sports fishing licence. A child can instead be named on a family licence, but only while the main licence holder is there.
  • In the Arapuni Dam tailrace, upstream of the white marker post, it is an offence to fish from a boat unless it is securely anchored.
  • Most streams flowing into the lake are closed to fishing. Fish & Game names the Waikato River, Pokaiwhenua Stream and Little Waipa Stream as the exceptions, and flooded backwaters are exempt. Check the Anglers Notice before fishing a stream.
  • Felt-soled waders and boots are banned. Do not use fish taken from another water as bait, and do not carry water or bait buckets between waterways.
  • The lake is busy with rowers, water skiers and power boats, particularly near Mighty River Domain. Keep well clear of courses and wear a lifejacket in a boat.
  • Check Mercury’s lake level page before launching or wading, and call its river flows line, 0800 820 082, if you plan to fish the river below the dam.

Getting There and Facilities

  • Access: good public access from State Highway 1, with five public boat ramps and walking tracks around the lake.
  • Mighty River Domain: 601 Maungatautari Road, on the western shore. From above you can see a ramp, jetties and large car parks beside the main building. There are toilets, rubbish bins and a playground. The domain is dog free.
  • Little Waipa Stream ramp: the launch Fish & Game recommends for reaching the best water in the upper lake.
  • River below the dam: for the water downstream of Karāpiro Dam, see our Waikato River below Karāpiro Dam fishing guide.
  • Things to do: for water sports, walks and the wider lake, see our Karāpiro adventures guide.
